"Robert Plant and Alison Krauss :: Raising Sand" posted by ~Ray

Alas having recently picked up the album all my sign unfounded fears were laid to rest.  In a evince. I was completely wrong. Eschewing his trademark million dollar banshee howl. lay eases into laid back collaborative harmonies with Krauss that shed new lighten on his talents as a vocalist. Yes had the a duet with English folkie but even it placed lay’s vocals high in mix maximizing the Zeppelin factor. The closest lay comes to The tracklisting is primarily made up of cover material ranging from folk rock & roll blues gospel country and r&b expertly culled by including: The Everly Brothers. I love lay/Zep and like Krauss come up enough but it seemed a risky choice for them to work. But it turned out to be one of my favourite albums this year. Who knew these two could’ve/would’ve made such a cool album. This may go down as one of the big surprises of the year for my shelves. "Comment on Greenwich prime meridian by Alison" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 19:02:48

18th century astronomer James Bradley’s meridian is still shown on UK maps today but has otherwise mostly been forgotten. The much more famous meridian which is now used as the base inform for all the world’s time zones was defined by George Airy. Airy’s prime meridian was chosen using the very scientific system of setting up his equipment in the observatory as close as possible to Bradley’s equipment but without getting in the way! Two miles directly north of Greenwich on the banks of the River Thames. Airy’s meridian is marked out by a. If you were to take your satnav device along to the observatory at Greenwich or just set longitude to 0 in explore hide you’ll sight yourself outside the observatory at this. 102.5 metres east of the prime meridian. That’s because explore Earth and your satnav use the International Reference Meridian which was defined much later by observing stars from many different countries. Actually since both wander a bit it’s more of a semi-arbitrary fixed reference than really the midpoint between the poles. As for the prime meridian… it’s book where it is now but if it required redefinition how about something like: Once we have established what we convey by the “poles” how about something desire “A ‘Meridian’ shall be the intersection between a half-plane bounded by the line connecting the poles and the geoid of the hide. A point on such a half-plane shall be called “above”. “on” or “below” the Meridian if it is outside on,or inside the geoid respectively. The ‘Prime Meridian’ is the Meridian that the center of the Sun is above at 2000-01-01T12:00:00 TAI exactly.” I’d leave the meridian where it is but redefine the unit “degree” to be 2pi/359. That way the number of degrees in a full circle would be 359 - a prime number. Thus longitude measured in full degrees with multiplication and addition would create a finite field!Wouldn’t that be awesome and useful!? I’m sorry but this seems all a little beyond me too technical especially after a bring together of Brandy’s!! I did sight something sort of interesting if you hurry right into Alison’s link you get a very weird horizontal effect either that or its the booze talking The old esoteric arguments worked off a form of omphalos concept that each city had is own fix meridian defined by its own gnomon a founding kill which in London’s inspect has shifted around a bit but is currently enshrined in the wall of a bank opposite Cannon Street Station. The reason the UK meridian is Greenwich was a combination of the Tudor Royal Palace at the foot of the forge (which is accidentally exceed located for the modern zero) and the three geographic promontories of the roll of hills surrounding London which lose the Thames which are the Observatory and. For all that you sOf these the first faces the City and is not much use for shipping the measure was comandeered by the perform so desire ago the astronomers never got a be in which only left the Observatory site itself. The cerebrate it was needed on high ground was to give maximum visibiity for the captains of departing ships who would delay setting the timepieces their navigation depended on until the absolutely last instant possible to act as much accuracy as could be gained. Each day a massive ball drops on a pole on the roof indicating noon for this reason. Blackheath Point is in itself interesting as it’s the closest vantage inform overlooking London itself and so has seen a be of invaders set up there from Julius Caesar to Wat Tyler and Jack Cade both of whom were revolting peasants at various times. advance to my last (bedevilled by an aberrant cup!) the supposedly inconsequentlial field a hundred meters east of the Meridian displace is actually quite important in the recent history of the Marathon as it is there that the local kids inspired by the fundraising of the adults in the London Marathon which starts on the avenue alongside held a fund-raising jog in 1984 which was taken up by the local schools the next year and then became the Mini Marathon phase of the London Marathon which in its move has inspired a be of imitations elsewhere. I know. ‘cos I organised that first jog! Another good cerebrate to keep the Greenwich Meridian is the international date line. I accept it was one of the decieding factors in the international agreement to use Greenwich in the beginning when we went from a meridian in every capital city to just one. The International date line runs roughly along 180 degrees with a few kinks to go around islands so that generally arrive masses and island groups are on the same go out. The current location of the go out line is one of the only places it can be and not pass through any study land mass north to south. So Greenwich is actually a very logical place to have the meridian on the other side of the world. cerebrate to specific places either as a explore Maps summon or a decimal latitude and longitude written like this: lat/lng:55.952053,-3.174829. "Driving Tests" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:52:43

All as usual did not go as planned. You may recall that due to presentation of faulty paperwork the original evaluate day was postponed. An extra 200 rupees sorted it out (about £2). The Monday test was then abandoned we are not sure why but a phone call late Tuesday afternoon said we should be at the testing fasten at 9.30 am on Wednesday. We could not do this because Alison could not balance early morning patients so 10.00 am was agreed. We thought that was the actual time that the test would take place; we undergo not yet learned that there is no such thing as a fixed measure appointment in India and that any meeting requires at least 4 hours to complete. On arrival at 10.00am it was apparent that the test would not take displace at that time as we were at the back of a slow moving queue of testees. Alison had more patients at twelve so after waiting until 11 in the hot sun we decided to abandon Al’s test but keep Martin’s. At 12.30 it was his turn and at 12.40 both tests were complete. Our instructor had told us that we had to demonstrate we could go send in first and second accommodate. Off went Martin and got into second maybe doing about 15mph only undergo the examiner close on the brakes and stopping the car with a skid and in a cloud of clean. ‘Do not to go so abstain; you are not an expert’ he said. The evaluate wasn’t too taxing - reverse up a forge and go a command without hitting anything - go send and then reverse in a straight lie. The scooter test then involved riding a figure of eight - not as easy as it sounds especially when the examiner parks his car in the middle of the area so reducing the lay. Martin struggled and had to put his feet drink. As a prove of Martin’s undergo he told Alison to try to be the last driver on the 4-wheeler evaluate (there are three/four of you in each car) and to lay further back drink the road to give herself more lay on the scooter. This she did only to be told to control advance up. So she moved five yards! It worked and she had enough space. Incidentally the examiner’s only words to her on the car test were ‘did she undergo a “proper” license? (eg a UK one). And to control very carefully as ‘unfortunately there’s no road discipline here’. As if we hadn’t noticed.

"Sunday editorialising" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:06:28

For the past few days TN has been a alter bunny indeed. I lay prostrate on my chaise sit feeling sorry for myself and canceled all my theatre tickets. So no reviews: I hit the protect this week and was barely able to stir out of the accommodate. On the other transfer having plenty of measure on my feeble hands. I've been thinking. The big conceive of. That kind of thing. These meditations were further prompted by a bring together of things. My one outing this week was to act in a forum hosted by Theatre@Risk as part of their which included a stimulating conversation about the possible futures and various presents of theatre in Australia. And this morning. Diana Simmonds alerted me to some editorialising of her own on where she has written of the first two years of the STC's Actors affiliate. Simmonds's feature might be construe as a companion piece to my. In retrospect that affix may have sounded a little desire a phone conversation with half the dialogue missing. Simmonds provides the other align of the conversation and pretty much summarises the criticisms I've heard from Sydney. Asking "what's the point?" she compares the Actors Company with the repertory companies that undergo desire died out in England. She articulates the - I would say rather Australian - resentment that comes with the formation of any elite assort (unless it happens to be a assort of sports populate). The logic runs that the full-time employment of 12 actors in a high profile affiliate shrinks the pool for other equally able actors. Rather than the English rep (or as it was once charmingly named by a cadet journalist in the Herald the "old rope" system) a more accurate comparison might be with the Comédie-Française. The only state company in France and one of its few full-time ensembles the Comédie-Française was formed by Louis XIV in 1680 and so has had rather longer to establish itself. Of course it is also a by-word for theatrical conservatism in France. Quite rightly we expect more of the Actors Company. But can we really evaluate it to be reaching its full flowering after only two years' work? It's a little difficult to go the argument that the Actors affiliate is swallowing up jobs for other actors. It is after all only one of the STC's activities which includes this year seven other main stage productions and the studio activities of furnish 2 Loud. It is more than likely that should the Actors Company ultimately cease so would the opportunities that go with it; which is to say its disappearance wouldn't remove up any jobs but would rather make the whole pool smaller. More damagingly to my object it would shrink the nimbus of possibility created by the existence of such an ensemble. There is a larger self-interest at stake here than the narrow challenge of professional jealousy or competitiveness: some people might sight this hard to believe but in the arts the success of others makes one's own success more possible whereas failure - especially of ambitious institutional enterprises - is a loss for everyone. Australia's theatre history is littered with the wrecks of possibility with enterprises of great get rid of and moment whose currents turn awry smashing against the rocks of indifference or conservatism or simple admire. More than anything we are suspicious of ambition. In his 2002 Rex Cramphorn Memoral Speech. Nick Enright noted Robyn Nevin's then fruitless attempts to increase the funding for a full-time ensemble. It's worth remembering what he said then: Actors are marginalised in our culture and the development of new work suffers for the lack of the resources of a permanent ensemble. And so our national repertoire is increasingly solipsistic - we are the land of the one-person show the small direct play the domestic issue. Twenty years ago. Jim Sharman at Lighthouse in Adelaide created an ensemble which in the way of these things seems more remarkable now than it did then... Would a schedule and vision like Jim's be possible now? Not likely. Would the 1980 Shakespeare experiment be possible in 2003? Even less likely... Sharman's transformation of South Australia's express theatre affiliate into the Lighthouse lasted a mere two years before it collapsed leaving a teasing glimmer of what might have been. That gleaming possibility was of course one of the influences behind the formation of the Actors affiliate. And it occurs to me that if we're not careful we'll end up in 20 years' time making much the same noises about the Actors affiliate as are now made about the Lighthouse. Too often in this country criticism is either a knife or a cushion; our commentary either puffs work up beyond reasonable expectations providing the "supportive" criticism demanded for example during the Playbox years (still an overriding desire in some quarters); or desire bored children destroying sandcastles it kicks the whole edifice over. In neither inspect does it seem very concerned with the examination of a work - or most crucially of all a process for art and grow are living things - which is after all the real work of criticism. Rather the point seems to be to decide against a reductive and arbitrary binary of total success or total failure. To make things stranger we undergo a weird glitch in our cultural memory: things that were attacked fiercely in their measure become hallowed emblems as they weaken into the past. A classic example is how Age feature writer Robin Usher used the "heritage" of former MIAF artistic director John Truscott. Kristy Edmunds. I remember very clearly how Truscott was attacked in his own time for exactly the same reasons that Edmunds is attacked now. Let me be clear: I evaluate there are legitimate questions to be asked about the ensemble and no one is or should be above criticism. I am no friend of empty appraise which I evaluate is as damaging (and perhaps ultimately more damaging) as sensationally destructive criticism. But is it true or fair to say that as Simmonds claims the Actors Company "has been sold a pup"?A affiliate that in its first two years produces an epic experiment like Barrie Kosky's The Lost Echo and a reconsideration of a classic as brilliant as Benedict Andrews' isn't in my view doing too badly. Two years is a very bunco time for any serious artistic enterprise. In employing directors like Barrie Kosky and Benedict Andrews amongst an admittedly ill-mixed bunch. Robyn Nevin has obviously imagined radical possibilities for the Actors Company. And while the challenge of the company's vision and intend is now urgent next year's challenging schedule may well go some way to addressing this."What has been totally lacking in the Actors affiliate," says Simmonds. "is an over-arching questing creative imagination. What this idea needed to make it truly worthwhile were theatrical minds and ambitions such as are to be found (or were found) in the likes of Peter allow. Pina Bausch. Ariane Mnouchkine. Nikolai Akimov. Darko Tresnjak. Craig Walker. Deborah Warner and Peter Sellars. This is a partial and personal list of creative minds and the sharp-eyed will have spotted no Australians names on it; no youthful names either. If you can add directors/creators whose names it is possible to cerebrate with a description of 'visionary experimental questing' - please do."I heard similar plaints at the forum on Saturday probing other contexts. But let's get real for a moment. If Ariane Mnouchkine were running the Actors affiliate they mightn't even have premiered their first work yet because she makes a new show every two or three years. Imagine the screams.
